So…

So, I started to plan a route for my round trip all the way thru Canada in Spring 2012. Plan is to buy a camperized van and get going around may 2012.

At the moment the itinerary is to start from Vancouver, BC up north to Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska, then back down south to Edmonton, Jasper, Banff and Calgary in Alberta.
Continuing thru Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Toronto and Ottawa and finally to Halifax, Nova Scotia and St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The way back to Vancouver will be thru the northern states of the US, adding up to a total mileage of ~20.000+ kms for the whole tour.

The Internet Society (ISOC) is coordinating the efforts of several major internet organisations to promote today’s World IPv6 Day. The major players involved in todays test include Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Akamai, Limelight Networks and many others: the ISOC web site lists a total of over 400 participating web sites. All of these, for this one day, have committed to offer their content over IPv6 in what is described as a „test flight“. In my opinion it is about time that IPv6 will be used as the major IP protocol as IPv4 addresses are (nearly) exhausted. But this yields another issue – a privacy one – as there are no so-called privacy extensions in the native IPv6 stack. As much as I can understand advertisers and content providers to have end-to-end IP connections again to be able to track each and every customer, as much do I like my own privacy and not everyone snooping around my private network at home.

What I hope to see in the future is native IPv6 addresses on mobile devices to be able to roam around the net and be able to seamlessly connect your VPN endpoints, SIP and therefore VoIP connections and be free again.

If someone is interested in some little stats like myself, have a look at the DE-CIX traffic stats. And yes, BTW, it’s really tera bits per second. Wow!

I’ve been fiddling with Microsoft Sharepoint Server 2010 Foundation for a while now and was wondering, why the heck I could not index PDF documents.
I could add the PDF icon and all, but search would not work. Even if I did the <del datetime="2010-12-07T09:19:51+00:00">same trick</del> workaround that worked with WSS 3.x.

After a myriad of registry edits I found a working solution:

In SQL Server Management Studio open your Sharepoint 2010 Search Database (usually WSS_Search) and open the table MSSConfiguration for edit.
Insert a new row with the following values (lookup you GUID and insert accordingly):

Name: <guid>\Gather\Search\Extensions\ExtensionList\48
Value: pdf
LastModified: Current Date and Time

Restart your Sharepoint services (or the whole server). When done, start a new full crawl by issuing the following command:

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\BIN\STSADM.EXE" -o spsearch -action fullcrawlstart

Remember! You will need a working PDF iFilter installation (Adobe PDF iFilter or Foxit PDF iFilter).

Twenty years back I have lived behind the iron curtain and we dreamt about visiting these „exotic“ places. Now we just book a flight and go there. It’s a strange world we live in, isn’t it? Constantly changing.

When you are developing .NET applications for your business you will need to deploy these to production at some point. Usually you will deploy the tool to a network fileserver and let the users run the application from there without local installation.
Of course one can use click-once since .NET 2.0, but sometimes the company developing the software will charge you a fortune for some minor changes like this (or digitally signing the application).

Well, I found another interesting way to configure the .NET security policies and deploy these via an .MSI installer file or even via a GPO (group policy object). Hence you can combine granting access rights to the file share with the deployment of the GPO. Nice.

Also, there are some really good Security Policy Best Practices at the MSDN site.
